Choosing your Tile Pattern Lay-out

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR

TILE PATTERN LAY-OUT

A popular flooring debate is which pattern to use to lay your tiles! Though different pattern lay-outs can look gorgeous and add interest in the right ways, it can be difficult to know which pattern is best suited for your space!

Below we will give you some pattern lay-out examples, and break down the dos and don’ts!

STACKED

The simplest way to install your tiles is by lining up your tile symmetrically. This look can create a more modern look, especially when placed on wall installation such as showers or fireplaces.

By stacking your tiles and using a grout in a similar colour you can also create a uniform look, making your floor a great backdrop for more dramatic pieces.

STAGGERED

With the majority of our tiles being a rectangular shape (3”x6”, 12”x24”, 18”x36” etc.) we are finding more and more customers are going with a staggered pattern lay-out. This installation can achieve a more traditional look, or a more organic look overall! With the popularity of wood-look tiles growing, using a random staggered lay-out can also create a more realistic wood look.

This look can also be beneficial in helping you elongate your space in a certain direction. For example: when you walk into a room, if the space is quite narrow we would suggest running your tiles horizontal from the entrance, which can create an overall larger feeling in the space.

HERRINGBONE

We have been seeing herringbone/chevron patterns all over the design world for the last few years, whether it is in home décor or fashion! This look can create a statement in any room. Using a mix of colours or a more elaborate patterned tile can make your tile the show stopper in your space.

A softer way to use this pattern is by using monochromatic colours, or maybe even a wood look! Using a simple subway tile in a herringbone pattern is a great way to create more interest.

SPECIALTY PATTERNS

Sometimes we will carry a line of tile available in multiple sizes, which allows them to be installed in a specialty pattern lay-out. This can create a unique look adding interest to your space!

Currently we are carrying our Town series tile, which is available in 3 sizes creating the pattern below. (Please note all three sizes are SOLD SEPERATELY, to calculate how many tiles of each please see our TOWN Series link below.)

We hope this helps give you a better understanding of the look you can achieve in your space by using different pattern lay-outs!
